The beverage industry has two main objectives when formulating a drink for the market - SHELF-LIFE and TASTE.

A long shelf-life is accomplished by adding preservatives and using processes such as hot-fill, pasteurization or aseptic processing. In other words, "boil" the liquid and add unwanted preservatives.

Adding sugar is the general method to makes beverages taste great. It's not a secret that diabetes and obesity is on the rise.
